Urban Tree Shed

New York, USA

Part of an international design competition to create a new standard of sidewalk shed for New York City.

In the concrete jungle, this shed is an oasis of greenery and colour, designed and conceived with five structural components made of recycled and maintenance free materials adorned with simple clay pot plants. These plants are native species of New York State, resilient to the hot summers and snowy winters. Their green foliage and bright colourful flowers will invite butterflies, release moisture, lower temperatures in the summer, absorb the oversupply of carbon dioxide and discharge oxygen into their surroundings. The plants are watered by a simple irrigation system working with gravity and using recycled sewage water from the adjacent buildings.
