Maputo, Mozambique
Our proposal for this aparthotel in Maputo city has its iconic shape very directly influenced by its immediate surroundings. Located in the corner of a city block, the more public and social program that makes up the lower floors expands to take advantage of the entirety of the land plot, maximizing the available area and maintaining clear contact with the surrounding streets. Meanwhile, the actual housing units themselves are arranged into a thin tower which rotates in relation to this lower block, making the most of the privileged views towards an adjacent park.
The angled walls on the balconies, which give the facade its distinct image, represent a further effort to orient these housing units towards the most favourable views and solar exposures, while shielding them from the surrounding buildings in an effort to preserve their privacy.
